Malaria-free Big Five, close to Johannesburg

Madikwe Game Reserve covers around 75,000 hectares on South Africa's border with Botswana, where bushveld meets the edge of the Kalahari. It is home to the Big Five and is one of the best places in the country to see African wild dog.

Because Madikwe is malaria-free and an easy journey from Johannesburg, it is ideal for families with young children, short safaris and travellers who prefer to avoid anti-malaria medication.

Three lodges in one: family-friendly Lelapa, intimate Kopano and Dithaba, each in its own corner of the reserve with sweeping views. Suites have fireplaces and private decks, and the area has a low concentration of safari vehicles.

Tuningi Safari Lodge

Named after the ancient fig tree that shades its boma, Tuningi is a relaxed, family-focused lodge built around an active waterhole, with an underground hide for eye-level elephant encounters. Spacious suites have outdoor rock showers and fireplaces.
