The short answer: May to October, the dry winter months, is the classic time for game viewing in Kruger and the Sabi Sands. The bush thins out and animals gather near water, so they are easier to find. But this is a year-round destination, and the green summer season has its own rewards: newborn animals, lush scenery, superb birding and often better rates.

The dry season: May to October

Very little rain falls in winter. The grass dies back, leaves drop and many seasonal pans dry up, so wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes. With less cover, it is simply easier to spot animals, and big cats in particular.

  • Wildlife: the most reliable game viewing of the year, building to a peak in September and October.
  • Weather: clear, sunny days, comfortably warm in the afternoon. Early mornings and evenings are cold, especially from June to August, so pack warm layers for open-vehicle drives.
  • Health: the area is low-risk for malaria, and the risk is lowest in the dry winter months.
  • Bear in mind: this is the busiest time of year, so the best lodges book up early. October can be very hot before the rains arrive.

The green season: November to April

The summer rains usually arrive around November, and within days the bush turns green. Most rain falls as short afternoon thunderstorms, so mornings are often clear for game drives.

  • Wildlife: it is the season of new life. Impala give birth in large numbers from late November into December, which draws predators, and many other species have young at this time.
  • Birding: migrant birds arrive from Europe and elsewhere in Africa, making this the best time of year for birdwatchers.
  • Weather: hot and humid, with afternoon temperatures often above 30°C.
  • Bear in mind: thicker vegetation can make some animals harder to see, and the malaria risk is higher during the rains, so speak to your doctor about precautions.

Why the Sabi Sands works all year

In Kruger's public areas, vehicles must stay on the roads, so thick summer bush can hide animals that are only metres away. In the Sabi Sands and Kruger's private concessions, rangers and trackers can follow animals off-road, and the number of vehicles at each sighting is limited. That makes summer game viewing far more rewarding than many travellers expect, especially for leopard.

Which season is right for you?

  • First safari, and the Big Five is the priority: June to October.
  • Photographers: the dry season for clear sightings and dusty golden light; summer for green backdrops and dramatic skies.
  • Families with young children: the cooler, drier winter months, or consider malaria-free Madikwe.
  • Birders and repeat visitors: November to March.
  • Value: outside the winter peak and the festive period, many lodges offer lower seasonal rates.

Whatever the time of year, the lodge, the guide and the pace of your trip matter as much as the month. Tell us when you can travel and what you most want to see, and we will plan a safari that makes the most of the season.
